Natural sources of choline

The main natural sources of choline are eggs, liver, meat, fish, and dairy products. Smaller amounts are found in legumes, broccoli, nuts, and whole grain products. In dietary supplements, choline is most commonly used in the form of choline bitartrate, phosphatidylcholine, or alpha-GPC and is supplied in capsules, tablets, powders, and liquid preparations.

Recommended choline intake

Women are recommended to consume about 425 mg, and men about 550 mg of choline per day. During pregnancy and lactation, the need for choline increases, so it is recommended to consult a healthcare professional for the appropriate amount.

Possible side effects of choline and drug interactions

When consumed in recommended amounts, choline is usually well tolerated, but high doses can cause nausea, digestive upset, increased sweating, a fishy body odor, or lower blood pressure. If you are taking medication or have chronic illnesses, consult your doctor before starting choline supplements.
