Article: Psyllium Husk

Psyllium Husk

Psyllium husk (Plantago ovata Forssk.), also known as blond psyllium, is the outer coating of the psyllium seed, prized for its high soluble fiber content. When it comes into contact with water, the husks swell up and form a gel-like mass.

What are the benefits of psyllium husk?

  • Supports healthy bowel function and regular bowel movements

  • Helps soften stools when fiber intake is low

  • Promotes a longer-lasting feeling of fullness

  • May help support normal glucose and cholesterol metabolism

  • Contributes to an adequate daily fiber intake

When might psyllium husk help?

Psyllium husk can be beneficial in the following cases:

  • When dealing with constipation or irregular bowel movements

  • When fiber intake from food is too low

  • When you want to feel full for longer between meals

  • When cholesterol levels are elevated

  • When aiming for steadier blood glucose levels after meals

Natural sources of psyllium husk

Psyllium husk naturally comes from the seeds of the psyllium plant (Plantago ovata Forssk.). The husks are separated from the seeds and used as a fiber source, most often sold in supplements as a powder, capsules, or granules.

Recommended psyllium husk dosage

A typical recommended intake is about 5-10 g of psyllium husk per day. The right amount should be chosen individually and taken with plenty of water.

Possible side effects of psyllium husk and interactions with medications

Psyllium husk is generally well tolerated, but larger amounts can cause bloating, gas, or intestinal discomfort. Because of its high fiber content, it can reduce the absorption of some medications, so it's recommended to leave a few hours between taking psyllium husk and taking medication.
